HIFU vs. RF: What's the Difference? Starting with the Depth Each Energy Reaches
Compare Liftera (HIFU) and Oligio (RF) by the energy they deliver and the skin layer each targets, and how Golden Diamant matches them to your concern.

Your face looks saggy, or your skin doesn't feel as firm as it used to. These concerns may sound alike, but the depth where the cause lies can be different. This article explains the energy that each of the two treatments we consult on together at Golden Diamant, Liftera's ultrasound (HIFU) and Oligio's radiofrequency (RF), delivers to which layer of the skin, and how each one is matched to different concerns.

Sagging and firmness: the causes lie at different depths
Facial skin is layered from the surface inward: the epidermis, the dermis, the subcutaneous fat, and the SMAS, the fascial layer that wraps the facial muscles. Viewed through these layers, the concerns largely fall into two categories.
Concern 01 / 02 · Sagging
When the deep layer (SMAS) that supports the skin from beneath loosens, the ligaments weaken, and the fat shifts downward, along with other overlapping changes, facial tissue can droop and the facial contour may look blurred.
Concern 02 / 02 · Elasticity and Skin Texture
When collagen in the dermis, the layer responsible for skin firmness, declines, the skin can look thin and lax. Fine lines, pores, and uneven skin texture may also become more noticeable.

If any of these concerns apply to you, we can look at both treatments together during your consultation.
· You're bothered by facial wrinkles or sagging
· Skin firmness or texture is your concern
· You'd like to consult about non-surgical options first
Here's the key point: sagging and loss of elasticity often coexist on the same face. So the right order is to first sort out at what depth your concern lies, rather than starting with the names of the devices.
The two devices use different types of energy
Liftera and Oligio are both non-surgical devices that deliver energy from outside the skin. However, the type of energy and the layer each one primarily targets are different.

Device 01 / 02 · Liftera
Liftera uses high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). Much like a convex lens that gathers light onto a single point, it concentrates ultrasound at a set depth within the skin and creates a small thermal coagulation point at that spot. According to manufacturer data, the focal depth can be selected from 1.5, 3.0, or 4.5 mm below the skin surface. Depending on the area and the thickness of the skin and fat, the 4.5 mm focus may reach the vicinity of the SMAS layer.
Device 02 / 02 · Oligio
Oligio uses 6.78 MHz monopolar radiofrequency (RF). Radiofrequency energy converts into heat within the skin and is delivered broadly, centered on the dermis. The manufacturer explains that the device is designed to reduce heat at the contact surface with a cooling spray while the energy is being delivered.
Here's how they differ beneath the skin
Looking at a cross-section of the skin makes the difference even clearer. Liftera concentrates energy into points at a set depth, and depending on the cartridge, the depth you treat can range from the dermis to the vicinity of the SMAS layer. Oligio cools the skin surface while delivering heat broadly, centered on the dermis.

Simplified diagram for illustration. Layer thickness varies by area, age, and body type, so the layer reached at the same depth can differ from person to person. Focal depths (1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 mm) are based on data from Liftera's manufacturer, Asteraysis, and Oligio's surface cooling is based on data from its manufacturer, Wontech. The target layers of each device are summarized based on Golden Diamant's guide materials.
Deeper is not always better. Which layer to treat depends on the depth at which the cause of your concern lies. If skin texture bothers you more than sagging, the dermis may need to come first rather than the deep layers. Focal depth and intensity are set differently depending on skin thickness and the amount of fat.
The two devices at a glance
This table is not meant to show which device is better. It simply places the characteristics of two different tools side by side.
Category | Liftera | Oligio |
Energy | High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) | Monopolar radiofrequency (RF) · 6.78 MHz |
Delivery method | Focused into points at a set depth | Broad heat delivery centered on the dermis (surface cooled) |
Main target layer | Dermis to near SMAS (depth varies by cartridge) | Centered on the dermis |
Sensation during treatment | Mild heat · prickling sensation | Warm heat |
Treatment time | Approx. 20–30 minutes | Approx. 20–30 minutes |
Possible reactions to watch for (examples) | Bruising · temporary numbness, rarely temporary weakening of facial muscles | Heat · redness, rarely blisters or burns |
This summary is based on Golden Diamant's guide materials (energy, target layer, treatment sensation, and time) and manufacturer data (focal depth, frequency, and surface cooling). The reactions listed are examples reported for each method. Reactions common to both treatments are grouped under “Possible reactions after treatment” below. The table reflects general device characteristics and does not indicate superiority. The actual areas and extent are determined after examining your face.
Used together, or on their own
For a face with both sagging and loss of elasticity, we may plan to use Liftera, which addresses the deeper layers, together with Oligio, which addresses the dermis. If your concern leans heavily toward one area, we may plan with a single device. The same criteria apply when the two are combined.
1. Divide the role each layer will play. Separate deep-layer sagging from dermal firmness and texture, and decide which area each device will address.
2. Shot count and intensity are designed individually for each face. They depend on skin thickness, the degree of sagging, and the contours of each area.
3. The sequence and intervals are decided during consultation. We'll guide you based on your skin condition and schedule.
Please keep in mind: using both devices together does not automatically make the results bigger. Choosing a combination that matches the cause and depth of your concern comes first.
Here's how the treatment process works
Golden Diamant follows a four-step process, from consultation through aftercare.
Golden Diamant treatment process. This is not a before-and-after photo.
1. Consultation. We assess your skin, identify the cause and depth of your concern, and create a plan.
2. Design. We determine the treatment areas and shot count to suit your face.
3. Treatment. After cream anesthesia, the clinic director performs the treatment personally. It takes about 20–30 minutes.
4. Aftercare. We guide you through soothing care and home care methods.
What to know before and after treatment
Both devices follow the same basic schedule outlined by Golden Diamant.

Redness and swelling usually subside within a few hours to several days, but burns, scars, or hollowing may last a long time or be permanent. If the pain increases or blisters appear, please contact the clinic right away.
Please tell us during consultation: For both devices, be sure to let us know in advance if you have an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker, any metal implants in the treatment area, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have wounds, inflammation, or skin conditions in the treatment area, if you have a keloid tendency, autoimmune disease, diabetes, epilepsy, or a bleeding tendency, if you have had facial nerve palsy, if you have had recent treatments such as filler or thread lifts, or if you are taking medications such as anticoagulants. Treatment may be restricted or the approach may change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Which of the two treatments is right for me?
It depends on whether your concern is closer to sagging of the deeper layers or to the elasticity and texture of the dermis. During consultation, we'll examine your skin thickness and degree of sagging directly, then plan either a single device or both.
Q. Will the treatment hurt?
Treatment is performed after topical cream anesthesia. Sensation varies from person to person. Liftera may cause mild heat and a prickling feeling, and Oligio may cause warm heat. The feeling may differ depending on the area and skin thickness.
Q. When will I start to notice changes?
Results may appear gradually over 2–3 months, and this varies by individual. Some people feel a tightening sensation right after treatment. It helps to know in advance that this is not a treatment that changes everything at once.
Q. How many sessions do I need, and at what intervals?
The number of sessions and intervals depend on your skin condition and concerns, and they are decided during consultation. The duration of results also varies by individual.
Q. Can I return to my daily activities right after treatment?
In many cases, daily activities are possible after treatment, but the degree of redness and swelling varies by person. We'll advise you on when to wash your face and apply makeup, as well as on precautions for the day of treatment, based on your skin condition after the procedure.
Q. Is there anything I should tell you before treatment?
Please be sure to tell us about any implanted electronic devices such as a pacemaker, metal implants, whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding, any wounds or skin conditions in the treatment area, keloid tendency, autoimmune disease, diabetes, epilepsy, a bleeding tendency, any history of facial nerve palsy, recent treatments such as filler or thread lifts, and medications you are taking, such as anticoagulants. Treatment may be restricted, or the device or approach may change.
What we look at first during consultation
Rather than the name of the device,
we first look at the depth of your concern
· Degree and direction of sagging: support from the deeper layers
· Skin thickness: the basis for determining focal depth and intensity
· Firmness and texture: the condition of the dermis
· Amount of fat: also considered when determining depth
· Facial contours: the basis for determining the treatment range and method
· Schedule: the time needed to monitor the results
